Speak First: Everyday English Communication

INTRODUCTION
In Malaysia, we are currently faced with a decline in English proficiency despite undergoing between 6-15 years of formal English education due to:

• Little to no exposure to the English language from a young age; and
• Being mocked and heckled for speaking English

When there is little to no exposure to English before the age of 7 years, the language becomes foreign to them when they enter Year 1. The introduction of rules and expectations to excel in examinations creates fear toward the language. Year after year, rules and expectations pile on and so does the fear. A discouraging environment filled with mocking and heckling further affirms their belief that English is just too difficult.

Upon graduating, the job market tells them that they have to speak confidently to be employed and advance in their career. Upon failing to deliver, they go for English courses and programs which remind them of the rules; rules that evoke fear.

After all those years, English isn't the problem. Fear of English is.
